Fried Green Tomatoes – the dish not the book

Ingredients
  

  • 2 Green Tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk or buttermilk
  • pinch of salt
  • pinch of pepper
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil

Instructions
 

  • Heat oil in skillet to 350 degrees (medium heat)
  • Slice tomatoes
  • In a small bowl combine, flour, salt and pepper
  • In a separate small bowl combine corn meal and bread crumbs
  • In a separate small bowl combine milk and eggs
  • Dredge tomato slices in flour
  • Then dip in milk and egg mixture
  • Finally dredge tomato slices in corn meal and bread crumb mixture
  • Place in hot oil and fry for about 4 minutes
  • Flip tomato slices and fry until golden brown all around about 4 more minutes
  • Drain on paper towel
  • Sprinkle with salt
  • Best if served while still hot or warm
