Fried Green Tomatoes – the dish not the book

Ingredients
  

  • 2 Green Tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk or buttermilk
  • pinch of salt
  • pinch of pepper
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil

Method
 

  1. Heat oil in skillet to 350 degrees (medium heat)
  2. Slice tomatoes
  3. In a small bowl combine, flour, salt and pepper
  4. In a separate small bowl combine corn meal and bread crumbs
  5. In a separate small bowl combine milk and eggs
  6. Dredge tomato slices in flour
  7. Then dip in milk and egg mixture
  8. Finally dredge tomato slices in corn meal and bread crumb mixture
  9. Place in hot oil and fry for about 4 minutes
  10. Flip tomato slices and fry until golden brown all around about 4 more minutes
  11. Drain on paper towel
  12. Sprinkle with salt
  13. Best if served while still hot or warm
