On the front porch of my in-laws home sits a big ole rack of firewood. Each cold day my father-in-law goes out there and retrieves the firewood and kindling and hauls it back in his arms. Day Ten of homemade Christmas is a kindling firewood carrier to make that job a little easier for him.

This homemade Christmas I have been trying to be very aware of things we already have lying around and not duplicating them or using scraps and remnants from other things to make new things. That’s what I did with this kindling firewood carrier.

TJ wears holes in work pants like no other. My four-year-old is quickly learning to do the same as his daddy with his pants. I am always disappointed when another pair bites the dust. They are expensive after all.

TJ brought me a pair that wasn’t terible from the front, but was seriously struggling at the back pocket. As in could see straight to his undies. He is the one who suggested I use his pants because they are sturdy and thick woven material. They’re meant to hold up, but don’t stand a chance against TJ.

Fabric cutout to make firewood carrier from old pants

Wouldn’t you know it worked out perfectly. Once I cut the pants right below the pocket and down the seam I had just enough fabric to make a carrier. I found a pattern on Pinterest from We Wilsons and it was extremely helpful.

The fabric before I cut the handles out and after I (and by that I mean my mother-in-law) sewed the two legs together to make a center seam of the carrier was 20”x40”. Then I cut out 6”x8” for the handle holder to fold over. We used old tobacco sticks for the handles because we had them in abundance. After all, they used to grow tobacco out here when TJ was a kid, but a wooden dowel would work beautifully.

I am super excited about this gift because when Mr. Mike isn’t here the fire building duties fall on me (thanks Mama and Daddy for teaching such important life skills growing up) and I hate to get wood splinters on my clothes because the baby is nearly almost in my arms with access to my clothes.

Here’s to lots more cozy fires this winter!
