Spicy pretzel sticks on a white plate

This is such a fun, super EASY, savory treat to take to your next gathering. These make me think of tailgating for football games, or Mardi Gras. Probably because our buddy Mitch always made them for LSU football games or Marsi Gras. 😂 If you want other ideas for food when it is football time click here.

It only takes a few minutes to whip up a batch and you will not be able to stop eating them once you stop.

This recipe is called firecrackers because I think we first had them on saltine crackers and they are spicy. You can use this same recipe and technique can be used on oyster crackers, saltines or pretzels. We’ve had them all and they are all amazing.

How to make the Spicy Firecracker Pretzels

Ingredients:

  • 1 box (16 oz) saltine crackers or pretzels (we like pretzel sticks)
  • 1 1/4 cups canola oil or vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 packet (1 oz) ranch dressing mix
  • 1 tsp Tony Chachere’s (or other Creole seasoning)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Pretzels/Crackers: In a large mixing bowl, gently place the saltine crackers, ensuring they are in a single layer.
  2. Spice Mix: In a separate bowl, combine the canola oil, crushed red pepper flakes, ranch dressing mix, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir well to create a spicy oil mixture.
  3. Coat Crackers: Carefully drizzle the spicy oil mixture over the saltine crackers. Use a spatula or your hands to gently toss and coat the crackers evenly.
  4. Let Them Marinate: Allow the crackers to sit and marinate in the spicy oil mixture for at least 1 hour, giving them time to soak up all the flavors. For best results, you can let them marinate overnight.

You can also put all the ingredients in a large zip lock bag and shake, shake, shake until mixed. We do this a lot.

OPTIONAL – NOT REQUIRED

  1. Bake: Preheat your oven to 250°F (120°C). Spread the crackers in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the crackers are crispy and golden brown.
  2. Cool & Store: Once baked, remove the firecrackers from the oven and let them cool completely. Store them in an airtight container to maintain their crunchiness and flavor.

Tip: These firecrackers are perfect for parties or as a zesty snack. Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to suit your heat preference. Enjoy the explosive flavor of these spicy treats!
